Description

Glass Egg Paperweight Ceramic & Polished Egg Glass Garfield Monument Paperweight

The tray glass paperweight is a souvenir of the James A. Garfield Monument in Cleveland, Ohio.

On one side is a sepia-tone photo of the James A. Garfield Monument and mausoleum in Lake View Cemetary in Cleveland, Ohio.

The memorial sits at the highest point of the cemetery and is the actual final resting place of the assassinated president. The caskets of Garfield and his wife, Lucretia, and urns containing the ashes of his daughter and son-in-law lie in a crypt directly beneath the memorial hall.

The memorial combines Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. The structure has been called the first true mausoleum in America, combining tomb and memorial functions. The monument, pinnacled by a 3-tiered circular tower 50' in diameter and 180' in height, stands upon a broad stone terrace. It is made of native Ohio quarry sandstone.

A white Carrara marble life-size statue of Garfield stands inside the monument in the memorial room. Around the balcony's exterior are five terra cotta panels with over 110 life-size figures depicting Garfield's life and death.

President Garfield was born in Moreland Hills, Ohio and was shot in Washington, D.C., on July 2nd, 1881, but did not die until September 19th, 1881. He died of sepsis from two gunshot wounds; he may have survived if not for the negligence of his physicians.

Lakeview Cemetary is also the final resting place of other notable names, such as oil magnate John D. Rockefeller, legendary lawman Eliot Ness and radio DJ Alan Freed.

On the other side of the glass paperweight is information about the memorial:

Height of Memorial: 180 feet

Number of steps: 150

Architect Geo. Keller

Sculptor of statue: Alex Doyle of New York

It has some damage/scratching that makes some of it difficult to read.
