Description

Antique Black Traditional Victorian/Edwardian Style 4 Piece Dress & Accessories

This is an incredible, one-of-a-kind find! The second photo in the gallery above shows the mother of one of the estate owners (pictured with a young relative).

The dress comes in several pieces: a blouse, a skirt, a sash, and a capelet (all black and of a brittle fabric). The accessories included with the dress are:

1 Black feathered mourning-style bonnet or hat

1 Pair of opera-length leather black gloves (gloves are dry but still pliable)

1 Gold-tone metal choker necklace

1 Gold-tone amulet-style metal cuff bracelet

1 Black leather evening handbag

The dress pieces and the purse have moisture stains (see photos). We tried to display the dress as best we could to photograph it without manipulating the pieces too much, as they were all very fragile. We couldn't truly capture the magnificence of the dress in photos!

According to the family, the dress is from the late 20s or early 30s. The picture in the gallery above was taken in August 1950; they were dressed to attend the City of Alliance's bicentennial celebration. Incidentally, the dress was kept in the antique cedar chest and is also up for auction (Lot 816). Did you know that Alliance is called "The Carnation City," and it is the reason the carnation became our state flower? The story is tied to the assassination of President William McKinley, who was from Ohio.

Descriptions are believed to be accurate but are not guaranteed. The photos are part of description; always refer to them (and your own eye) as the default description, as photos may show wear not mentioned in the description. We do our best to describe and photograph the items in each lot to show any wear or defects; however, a perception of a "flaw" can vary from person to person. Thank you for looking!
