Description

This pamphlet is a rare historical artifact related to the mourning period following Abraham Lincoln's assassination. It is bound in a flexible printed wrapper published by Carlton & Porter in New York in 1865 from the funeral of President Lincoln on May 4, 1865, in Springfield, Illinois (published 1865). Rev. Simpson, who gave the address, was a prominent Methodist bishop and a close friend of Lincoln, delivering the main graveside address at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield, Illinois, at the opening of the vault containing Lincoln's remains. It was a momentous speech that helped shape perceptions of Lincoln's legacy, blending grief with reflections on the costs of war and the republic's future.

Also included in the lot is a hardcover First Edition book titled "The Life of Matthew Simpson" by Robert D. Clark, published by The Macmillan Company in 1956. The Lincoln funeral pamphlet was found tucked inside this book, a biography of Matthew Simpson, a prominent Methodist Bishop and an influential friend of President Abraham Lincoln. The inside cover of a 1953 book features a handwritten dedication, "To my friends Floy and Dean in gratitude for many pleasant moments, Edward Johnson, June - 1953." It is a biography of Rev. Simpson's life.

The handwritten notes on the title page of the pamphlet also indicate it was given to "Floy and Dean" by Rev. Edward Johnson in December 1965, a century after the address was delivered. We surmise that Rev. Johnson gave both the book and the pamphlet with the address to friends Floy and Dean in December 1965, apparently while he was a pastor at St. Peter's Church in Hay Springs, NE. The handwritten note inside the pamphlet says that it was issued by the Illinois State Historical Society, of which Rev Johnson was a member.
